The Top 5 Celebrity Red Carpet Looks from the 2014 Golden Globe Awards
Just a few days ago, actors and actresses took to the red carpet for the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards that took place at the somptuous Beverly Hilton Hotel in California. And, as always, all eyes were on the dresses and gowns.
This year, the colors of choice the celebrities adorned themselves with were predominantly black, red and white, but pops of color did make their way to the red carpet. Lena Dunham’s yellow strapless, Aubrey Plaza’s lavender and violet vintage-inspired frock and Caitlin Fitzgerald baby blue gown challenged the norm and offered a breath of fresh air at the same time.
But what were the winning looks this year?
Lupita Nyong’o
Without a doubt, the star of “12 Years A Slave” was the camera’s sweetheart. Her showstopping cape dress by Ralph Lauren, in warm red and with an off the shoulder twist, gave the blogs something to talk about. Accessorized modestly, with a golden clutch and simple jewelry, the red gown looked royal and clean against Lupita’s minimal makeup and her short hair.
Get the look: A hairstyle like Lupita’s is hard to imitate. You either have it or you don’t. But if you want a similar off the shoulder cape dress and you’re not willing to spend $7000 on it, try deconstructing the outfit. Look for a cape dress, like Narciso Rodriguez makes and sells online or try a Nasty Gal budget buy. A red off the shoulder number is another great option.
Naomi Watts
Embarking on the metallics trend train, Naomi Watts struck gold with this body flattering silhouette crafted by Tom Ford. Although silver and gold are not a traditional match, this time the dynamic duo worked to Naomi’s favor. The gold clutch, cuffs and statement necklace only add quality to her outfit. Naomi opted for a simple hairdo and natural looking make-up and the only visible pop of color was her dark red pedicure.

Get the look: If you have shoulder length hair, you’re in luck. A side part and a bit of shine and control are all you need to get the subdued, but classy hair Naomi Watts rocked at the Golden Globes. For the makeup, the focus is on natural looking skin, so make sure you use a very light foundation, illuminator and a natural looking blush. As for the gown, try Shopbop, for a splurge option, or Topshop, for the budget buy.
Zoe Saldana

This neo-romantic look from Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2014 collection is as flattering as it is innovative. The delicate flowers, paired with the strict bustline turns Zoe Saldana, who has a history as a ballerina, into a veritable work of art, delicate as well as commanding. With her hair pulled back, her lips orange-red, her nails black and her accessories dusty pink, she channels edgy chic with all her being.
Get the look: With Zoe Saldana, the focus is on the flawless face and the sexy lips. Pull your hair into a sleek bun or ponytail and use a bold, but skin matching lipstick. Don’t forget about the eyebrows, which should be flawlessly shaped and colored. And, while the Prabal Gurung frock is certainly unique, a romantic dress with a bombshell twist might be a good option.
Lena Dunham
With Girl’s recent premiere, Lena Dunham managed to match that moment with her bright yellow mermaid dress by Zac Posen, which she wore with a subdued Hollywood style make-up, red nails and simple necklace and ring. Her hairstyle was effortless, so as to let the dress and the makeup shine.

Get the look: The key to getting Lena’s glow is finding a balance between outfit, hair and makeup. Keep it simple with the hair, by giving it a slight wave and parting it on one side, get your face blended and luminous and add a touch of lipstick, mascara and eyeliner. If you’re looking for the perfect yellow dress, the options are many. If you’re willing to splurge, go for Marchesa. If not, there’s always Target.
Amber Heard
Amber wore a dark, luscious blue gown from Atelier Versace, which she matched with “New Mariah” black platform sandals from Jimmy Choo and beautiful earrings from Graziela Gems. The look Amber was going for was no doubt sexy, with a classic twist. She wore her hair in a loose bun and a brown smokey eye was at the center of her Golden Globes makeup.

Get the look: To have an Amber Heard moment, you must focus on the hair. This bun is not simple to achieve and requires plenty of hairspray and a determined mind. Focus on height and that effortless look this hairdo oozes. To complete the look, use false lashes or curl your natural ones and paint a smokey eye in brown or burgundy. A hint of rose colored blush, as well as golden beige lip shimmer will make you feel like a red carpet diva. Temperley London, as well as Reem Acra have similar looks in their collection and, although a bit on the expensive side, some may be able to rent them.
This year, the Golden Globes was mostly an elegant display of classic red carpet dresses. The women who dared to be different were rewarded with the attention of the press, so let’s hope next year brings more adventurous stars into the spotlight.
