The Science Behind Microdermabrasion

ultrasonic face cleaning, peeling, in a beauty salon Over time, external factors (such as the sun and even pollution) can have a damaging effect on your skin. And while there are chemical peels, serums, and other options available for improving the appearance and health of your skin, microdermabrasion remains one of the most popular treatments, with the average cost being around $150 per session.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Specifically, microdermabrasion refers to a procedure that utilizes a specially formulated spray containing microcrystals to remove dead skin. Once the dead, outer layer of skin is successfully removed, a youthful and more vibrant layer of skin remains. Furthermore, microdermabrasion promotes the growth of new skin cells with higher amounts of elastin and collagen, both of which contribute to more youthful and healthy looking skin.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

There are many benefits to using microdermabrasion to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other skin imperfections or blemishes. For starters, microdermabrasion is non-chemical and completely non-invasive, so there are no injections or harsh chemicals that you need to worry about irritating your skin. Instead, microdermabrasion is a gentle, painless procedure that can be done in as little as 20-30 minutes to reveal noticeable results. It’s actually ideal for those with sensitive skin, since non-allergenic crystals are used to prevent irritation or any negative side effects.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

In most cases, half-hour appointment times are scheduled for microdermabrasion. However, your appointment length may vary based on the specific areas of the body you’re having the procedure done. For example, at Bellezza Spa, we offer this procedure on the arms, back, decollette, face/neck, and hands. You can typically expect your session to last for about 15-30 minutes per area of the body being treated.

When you have the procedure done, you shouldn’t feel any pain. However, some people do report a warming sensation over the skin being treated that is the result of the microcrystals doing their job to remove dead skin.

Are You a Viable Candidate?

If you’re thinking about trying microdermabrasion, it’s important to schedule a consultation with a skin care professional to ensure that you’re a viable candidate for the procedure itself. Typically, the best candidates are those who have some fine lines, wrinkles, and blemishes, along with any minor skin conditions (such as acne or rosacea).

Unfortunately, microdermabrasion is typically not recommended for those with deep scars, serious skin conditions,, or auto-immune system disorders. Furthermore, if you have had a chemical peel or other skin procedure done recently, it is usually recommended that you wait at least a couple of weeks before scheduling microdermabrasion.

If you’d like to achieve healthier, more youthful looking skin, contact Bellezza Spa today to schedule your microdermabrasion appointment. We’d love to assist you! Our spa is open convenient hours seven days a week so it’s easy to find an appointment day and time that works with your crazy schedule!
