Help Your Hair Last the Winter with a Keratin Treatment

Cool winter days in Florida are sure to give us chapped lips, dry skin, and red noses, however, those are not the only victims of cold weather. Our hair gets dried out too in the winter time, no thanks to the cooler temperatures we see here in Miami during the winter months. But as we crank up the furnace to keep warm indoors, the dry heat from our heating systems strips our hair of its much needed moisture. Static, frizz, and dull, dry locks are only the start of your winter hair problems, but the good news is you can defend your hair against the elements by using a keratin treatment.

What Keratin Is

Contrary to what you might think, it’s not only used in the salon as a straightening treatment. Keratin is a natural protein that is found in your nails, hair, and the skin’s outer layers. The protein is found in different beauty products and coats the outside of your hair which strengthens hair fibers and smooths the cuticle layer.

How a Keratin Treatment Works

A keratin treatment will attach to your hair’s natural keratin, resulting in shiny, straight, and polished looking hair.

The steps to a keratin treatment are simple and include:

  • The keratin product is applied to your hair by a trained med spa stylist.
  • The treatment is left in your hair as it is flat-ironed or blow-dried.
  • Depending on your hair thickness and length, the treatment takes around two hours.
  • Do not wash your hair for three to four days.

Benefits of Keratin Treatments

If you’re in front of the mirror and hour or two a day trying to straighten your hair with a flat iron, a keratin treatment could be just what you need. It can actually save you a great deal of time having to get ready each day. It will also take any frizz or static out of your hair (especially during the winter time). You will be able to walk outside in the rain or humidity without having to worry about your hair frizzing or poofing out again. Most ladies also find that their hair is so much easier to blow dry than before their keratin treatment.

Are You a Good Candidate?

At this moment, you might be asking yourself if you are a good candidate for this treatment. If your hair is super curly, unruly, and frizzy in the winter or summer, this treatment is for you. Remember, there are chemicals in this treatment usually, and the amount depends on the brand. You should talk with your stylist if you have any concerns, however, typically, a certified salon will not use an amount that isn’t safe. Your keratin treatment should last between three to six months.
