You love your nails. Pretty, well-tended nails are an integral part of being feminine, and a good nail-care routine is one of the ways you show the world that you care about your appearance and like making an effort. Yet no matter how hard you try, you can never seem to get the right shape for your hands.
No one blames you. With the huge variety of nail shapes out there, it can be tricky to find the one that works for you. Oval, square, almond, pointy, half-moons … the choice can be overwhelming. We’re here to make it easier on you with a few suggestions for nail shape depending on the characteristics of your hand.
Fingers
The first characteristic other people are likely to notice about your hands is the length of your fingers. If they are very long, then you can minimize that by keeping your nails filed short. If they are stubby, on the other hand, you might choose to add length to your fingers with a longer nail.
Nail Bed Length
The shape and size of your nail beds also matters. With very long nail beds, you don’t need to grow your nails as long or file them as sharply in order to make your nails as a whole look lengthy and elegant. Rounded and square shapes often work well for those with naturally long nail beds. On the other hand, if you have stubby nail beds, you can maximize your nail by filing to an oval or an almond-shaped point.
Nail Bed Width
Width also matters. If your beds are wide, your nails may look strange without a longer tip to balance them. In this case, almond and oval again work well. If your nail beds are quite narrow, you can balance the look with a shorter, blunter shape, such as squared-off or rounded.
Nail Length
Your nail length is more a personal choice than either of the above two characteristics, but it’s still important. If you feel more comfortable with long nails, you’ll never be happy forcing yourself to adopt a shorter approach. The reverse is also true. If you have long fingers and like long nails, however, you can minimize the claw-like effect by filing them into an oval or square shape. If you have short fingers and like short nails, you can still make them look quite feminine just by rounding the tips.
However you choose to shape your nails, opt for a style that suits your personality and the ways you spend your time. If you’re rough on nails, for instance, short might be a good idea no matter how much you love long (better than cracking and breaking, right?). But the whole point of this exercise is to feel uniquely, comfortably you, so don’t forget it.
