4 Smoking-Hot Up and Coming Fashion Designers to Watch Out for in 2014

Each year, all eyes are on the big names on the runway. The gods and goddesses of style set the tone for the next season and we fear and love them at the same time. But during Fashion Week, new stars also begin to shine.

For 2014, many young designers have taken a stand, introducing fresh ideas and aesthetics and giving bloggers and editors alike something to talk about. Here are the most promising names which are going to be big this year.

Kaelen

Born in Toronto, Kaelen Haworth switched from English literature to fashion and she never looked back since. Schooled at Parsons and working for MTV, Jenni Kayne, The Lake & Stars and Stella McCartney, Haworth managed to launch her own brand — KAELEN — in 2010, at New York Fashion Week — a dream every young fashion graduate no doubt has.

Kaelen is all about sharp tailoring, experimental design with a ladylike twist, one of the biggest trends in the last years. You’ll see minimalist silhouettes, masculine-feminine contrasts of shape and detail and, most importantly, pieces that promise to become referential.

How to achieve this look:

Go for pieces that stand out in a quiet, subdued manner. Try black and white interpretations of floral prints, mini skirts with graphic details, feminine shoes and masculine accessories — like bowties.

Jérôme 5:31

Jerome LaMaar’s first collection was Spring 2014, so it doesn’t get any fresher than this. But being a new name didn’t stop style.com from calling him “the next big thing”, so we’re deciding to keep our eyes peeled for Jérôme 5:31, the brand that made such a good impression on fashion editors all around the web.

The truth is that LaMaar is actually quite a veteran in the industry. He’s interned at Baby Phat, became their senior designer at 18, worked for Ralph Rucci and, finally, managed to put his name out there with his line’s debut collection.

LaMaar creates clothing that manage to reconcile street style opulence with sophistication. Peony-appliquéd baseball hats are paired with sleek all-white ensembles and suede heels. Printed sweatshirts are toned down by minimalistic skirts and clean shapes, which gives the entire collection a wearable, easy factor that’s so attractive.

How to achieve this look:

Think of unusual combinations with pieces you already own. A sporty element like a cap or t-shirt can be upgraded with something a bit more fancy like tailored trousers or minimalistic leather heels. Use all-white pieces and splash a bit of color through accessories.

Joining the trend of brand revivals, Madrid-based label Delpozo is making a comeback in style. After the death of original designer, Jesus del Pozo, who founded the company back in 1974, Josep Font was named creative director in 2012.

For Spring 2014, Font brought out a charming aesthetic. Inspired by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot’s portrait of a gypsy woman with a tambourine, the line combines statement silhouettes with subtle design elements. The obvious femininity of the pieces has an almost surreal, floating feel, which is enhanced by the pastel colors and fabric combinations.

How to achieve this look:

This dreamy look requires attention to texture, color and shape. A structured off-white midi skirt is a great way to start. Pair it with silver heels, flowy, but minimalist top and colorful eye make-up.

Rodarte

Rodarte is definitely not a completely new name on the runway. The sister-run brand founded by Kate and Laura Mulleavy was launched in 2005 and it’s been on the front pages since, with its cool, alternative style that’s embraced by the young crowd.

Still, the ready-to-wear Spring 2014 collection is particularly one to be on the lookout for anyone, as it can take you completely out of your fashion comfort zone and give new meaning to desirable. The L.A. inspired looks are over-the-top, with 80s silhouettes, opulent fringe and shiny bustiers, giving the nostalgia trend more power and decisiveness than any other 2014 show we’ve seen.

How to achieve this look:

Baseball caps, loose leather vests, snake skin boots and animal print are just a few elements that can help you emulate these looks, but the whole idea here is personal interpretation. Think about your own signature pieces from when you were young and see how they can be updated.

New designers are always interesting to watch. They’re the new generation, the ones that can bring a change to the fashion industry. They represent the young more than any other established designer could and, it seems, some are here to stay.
